David Archuleta featured in "Square" Magazine In 1986 the group "Huey Lewis and The News" released their single, "Hip to Be Square", which reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100. That oxymoronic song title seems to adequately describe David Archuleta. David is clean, well-groomed, polite, decent, moral, and about as straight as they come. By today's standards, David Archuleta is square. The dictionary defines square as someone who is an old-fashioned, conservative, person.
What is sad, and unfortunate, is that today's music industry has done everything in their power to make sure their artists steer clear of anything closely resembling being square. Who would have imagined the degeneration of music such that songs now come in two versions, "explicit" and "clean". If being cool means pushing aside character, then it truly is better to be square.
What is remarkable about David Archuleta is that he's proving that you don't have to be void of character to be hip or popular. In fact him being square, a word I am loosely equating with character for sake of this article, is the very quality that has made David Archuleta unique, and refreshing, among other pop stars. The music industry so desperately needs David Archuleta.
Hey David!...slick down your hair, throw on that cardigan sweater and embrace your squareness. You've got tons of fans who will support you for that very reason and remember that whatever name the music industry, or anyone else, wants to give you…you've proven it's hip to be square.
As Huey Lewis sang, "You might think I'm crazy, but I don't even care, because I can tell what's going on…It's hip to be square".

Great article, Gallie and so very true. Happy New Year to you and your family, as well as your staff and fans at CDC!

P.S. That is the best picture of David - love the retro vibe!
Very clever tie in to this magazine cover and the song Steve!! You must be eating your Wheaties.. you are really writing up a storm.
I am so glad that David embraces this side of his personality...because it allows others ...young and old to do the same.
So many shallow and down right self destructive celebrities appear in popular magazines and have their own TV shows to showcase their excesses. David comes along...with more talent then all of them put together.... and is he making silly demands....No...he is meeting fans and doing charity events...and he is the first to say "I'm a dork". Well if that's the definition of a "dork" or a square.....where can I go to sign up?
Don't you love the way he is having fun with this photo shoot?
Thanks Steve...a hip and thought provoking blog.
Wonderful article Gallie. -- sure wish we had someone like David 3 decades ago - could have used some one to show that it was hip to be square! Well better late than never.
Thanks for the New Year wish MCL.
Judith well put - but I think we both have already signed up at the dork table!
One thing we know for certain - there will never be one of those red explicits next to the name David Archuleta.
LOL...Ha..Ha. ;-)
ArchieFanDoc you are right! I did already sign up at the dork table!!
Hello MCL - I am glad that you stopped by, and a Happy New Year to you, too! I like that picture of David, too...even though it's a bit "square". I guess I like it because I'm kinda square myself.
Hello Judith - It is said that the person who is most comfortable with what they believe and who they are is able to poke fun at themselves. I have heard David on numerous occassions refer to himself as a "dork" or something like that. It proves that he's OK with that. It tells us that his convictions run deep and that he's willing to take the hit for having them, even at the expense of being considered a "dork" or "square". Confirmation of his character, once again.
I like that you pointed out that David is not making silly demands, but approaching this with a servants heart. That is what will touch lives and change the world.
Hello AFD - I think that right now is when we need a David on the music scene. Gosh, things have gotten so messy in the music industry. David, and a few others out there, who are doing decent quality music are needed to leaven things up. Yeah, I've already signed up for that dork thing, too. If you have any doubts...ask my wife :o
Take Care All,
Steve Gallie
It is quite sad that our music industry has done everything in it's power to demean character in every artist they promote. As music has such a powerful influence on our lives, it certainly has a huge impact on our youth.
It is so refreshing to have an artist, as David, who promotes good character (or being square), as the example of being yourself is more important than being, so called "popular". I applaud David for standing by his convictions in an industry that I'm sure wished he would cave and be like the rest of the other artists.
Very clever article Steve.
Thanks for the AWESOME article Steve! David's character is the EXACT reason why I started enjoying music again! Until David I started losing faith in the whole music industry due to the provocative and down right nasty stuff that has been coming out. Where has all the taste gone??
David has once and for all proved you can make admirable, amazing, astonishing, awe-inspiring, brilliant, divine*, enjoyable, excellent, fantastic, incredible, magnificent, miraculous, outstanding, phenomenal, pleasing, remarkable, sensational, tremendous, and wondrous music!! Haha sorry but all those word fit David PERFECTLY :)
Thank you David!! Keep up the great work and we all look forward to what you have in store in 2009!!
Thanks to the CDC staff as well! You all are AWESOME!!
Crystal from windy Wyoming :)
"Embrace your inner squareness"......I remember the first time back in late March when someone, who ended up becoming a very good e-friend, first coined the phrase "David is the new 'cool'". It caught on because everyone recognized the verity of his observation.
The truth is, we are all 'dorks' in one way or another. As Steve said, David shows us that it's okay to be who we are, ...to be a 'dork', is to be 'cool'. David's setting a new standard, both in the music industry and in the world....and it's being embraced because people are tired of trying to live up to an unreal 'supercool' image that is projected by the entertainment industry and media in general. People really just want to be themselves.....and know that that is okay and accepted.
David's outlook isn't new, but it is revolutionary, at least it has the potential to be. Edith Warton said, "There are two ways of spreading light....to be the candle.....or the mirror that reflects it." We can be a candle, but we are all mirrors. What we reflect is of our own choosing.....determined by which direction, or whose direction, we choose to face.
Oh, it is indeed windy in Wyoming, which I learned on a handcart trek, Crystal!
You might like to know that that magazine is actually square. It's 8 1/2 by 8 1/2. Clever!
One fun thing about David is that he loves being who he is. He likes his standards and he shows the world that you can have strong morals and it makes you happy.
People really just want to be themselves.....and know that that is okay and accepted.
Excellent point!
