Man in the Mirror

------

A mirror reflects the exterior part of who we are. We spend time preparing and getting our external appearance just right to “present” ourselves to the world. We style our hair, shave, put on makeup and wear nice clothes. Our external appearance is important to us, and so we make sure that others see us as well groomed and nicely dressed. We spend the time to reflect to the world a part of us that we feel comfortable with. There is nothing wrong with looking presentable, but I wonder how many of us take the same amount of time to groom and prepare what’s inside of us. That way when we do interact with others, we are able to care, love, and touch the lives of those around us. The mirror reflects our outward appearance but our actions reveal what lies within. Character is more than skin deep!

In David Archuleta’s recent blog he discussed how he was touched by watching Michael Jackson’s memorial, and recommended that we listen to the song, “Man in the Mirror”. Here's an excerpt of his blog:

Song for the day: Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson
I know this song has been everywhere lately, but thank goodness it is! It is one of the greatest songs, with the most amazing message of starting with the person in the mirror. So take it to heart: If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change! July 8, 2009

David Archuleta is right! We should take to heart the fact that change really does begin with us. The change that David refers to comes from that part of us that is not to be found in a mirror's reflection. We can pretty up our external appearance and fool many people into thinking that we have it all together, but the real reflection of who we are is so much more. It is evidenced by our willingness to love others. Yes, let's heed the words of David Archuleta and think about how we can make a change in this world for the better, but remember it begins with looking in the mirror and seeing beyond just our external reflection. It begins with what lies deep within our soul...OUR CHARACTER!

I See the kids in the street with not enough to eat, who am I to be blind pretending not to see their needs...I'm starting with the man in
the mirror I'm asking him to change his ways and no message could have
been any clearer if you wanna make the world a better place take a look at yourself, and then make a change.
"Man in the Mirror", sung by Michael Jackson, 1988

A good Reflection Steve! Sorry had to say that. David's physical image is young and healthy and handsome but if David had a magic mirror that showed his inside image it would be even more impressive. Actually in a way he does have that magic mirror...in the fans that see his spirit...his soul...his inner beauty and are inspired to make the world a better place because of his example.

Judith - You are so right. We do have a magic mirror to his soul...we see it in how he has acted this past year. There is much to appreciate with David and what lies within, and that is what we are doing here on CDC...stopping to appreciate the great character of this young man.

Take Care

Nice article Steve -- and what great blog that was from David.

Judith - I love what you said of the magic mirror that reflects our inner beauty.

Steve -- Thank you for this well-written take on that excerpt from David’s blog. I agree that we should start with ourselves when trying to improve things in our community or the world. What we do ourselves is really the only thing that we have much control over, anyway. I also agree that we should pay more attention to internal qualities, like character, than to external appearances. Thanks again for this nice highlight!

Hi Steve- I loved that David, in his blog, drew our attention to that special line in "Man in the Mirror" and asked us to take it to heart. Our superficial appearance doesn't matter. What's important is the way we choose to live our lives and interact with others that comes from deep inside. Unlike the process of getting ready each day, you once said, "Character isn't something we wake up one morning and decide to put on. The reality of character is that all the choices we make behind closed doors culminate into the kind of person that we become and what is visable to the public." I think we all agree that David's inner goodness shines through like a beacon and is as much a gift to us as his beautiful music.
Both David and Michael have placed tremendous value in the messages in their music and you, Steve, do a wonderful job in conveying beautiful messages with your words! Thank you for another great article.

Steve,

I really enjoyed this article. David always reminds me to take a good look deep inside myself!

There is an expression... what makes you beautiful on the inside will make you beautiful on the outside. So true! No matter what we may see in the mirror at the end of the day, it is our actions that will define who we are and how we are seen by others.

David is a beautiful soul for sure!
